Santa Maria

The first contact with this volcanic archipelago was on the island of Santa Maria, the first to be seen and populated. In 1493, in search of shelter, Christopher Columbus and his ships docked on this island, returning from the first voyage of discovery of America. Being the southernmost island, this place offers unique characteristics, not only in its soil, but also in nature throughout the island. Due to its drier climate, there are two notably different areas, a flat area and a low altitude area, namely the center of Vila do Porto, and as opposed to areas of high hills full of vegetation, including Pico Alto, the Serra highest on the island.p>

The authentic and intact geological formation suggests that this is the oldest island in the archipelago (more than 8 million years old), which explains the existence of unique marine fossils in the Azores Archipelago, which can be easily seen in the Natural Monument of Pedreira do Campo, Figueiral and Prainha, making people wonder about the past.

Praia Formosa is considered by many to be the best beach in the Azores, being the only one in the archipelago with white sand, and being a direct consequence of the geological formations. Maia and Anjos, on the contrary, have several natural pools, another result of volcanic activity.

The crystal clear waters attract the attention of those who observe them, including divers from all over the world, as it is considered one of the best places in Europe for diving and snorkeling.

It is easy to see that Santa Maria is the perfect place for those looking to relax and enjoy a beach holiday.
