São Miguel

São Miguel, together with Santa Maria, form the eastern group of this Portuguese archipelago. São Miguel is the largest and most populous island in the Azores and the city of Ponta Delgada is the island's capital. This island is home to the Priolo, one of the most endangered and rare bird species in Europe. It is a small bird endemic to São Miguel and can only be found in the eastern part of the island, in the laurel forest. Traveling through São Miguel allows you to see cows every kilometer. Cow farming is one of the most important economic activities on the island, which is why we can see extensive green grass pastures throughout the island.

Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of the island, but lost this status to Ponta Delgada following a major earthquake in 1522. Ponta Delgada gained capital status due to its economic and urban development, its port and the administrative services established there. . You are invited to stroll around this city and explore the corners that tell its history.

Full of legends and popular stories, this island has unique volcanic formations and very rich soil. Lagoa das Sete Cidades (one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal), Lagoa do Fogo and Lagoa das Furnas are part of this spectacle of volcanism, constantly demonstrating what these islands are made of. From Mosteiros to the Northeast, there are many scenic features, such as lagoons, waterfalls and thermal baths that will make you want to return for a second or third visit.

Between pilgrimages and cults, faith has always been the center of the life of the Azorean population who, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, sought greater forces to guide them. With one of the biggest religious festivals in the country, the typical pilgrimages associated with Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres are a demonstration of devotion, which has maintained the tradition over the years.
